Mass defection looms in Anambra PDP

AS the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) holds its congress today in the 21 local government areas of Anambra State today, indications are rife that the party might experience mass defection of its members.

This is barring last minute reconciliation of aggrieved stakeholders and members, who had on Tuesday threatened to quit the party should the National Working Committee (NWC) of PDP refused to shift the ongoing congresses for at least five days.

The aggrieved group, led by the party's governorship candidate in the 2013 election in the state, Mr. Tony Nwoye, had boycotted the ward congress held on Tuesday on the grounds that the congress was not in conformity with the guidelines of the party.

But the threat of the group seem not to have received the NWC's attention as the party went ahead with the congress in the 326 wards in the state, which witnessed large turnout of party members. As at press time yesterday, the NWC seemed to have gotten ready for today's local government congress.

Nwoye and his group had, while briefing newsmen, warned that if the NWC failed to shift the congress for at least five days, they would explore other options.

Nwoye stated that 98 percent of PDP members in the state were not aware of the exercise, because of the public holidays, and that, that made it impossible for those aspiring for positions within the party in the state to purchase nomination forms.

He said: "We challenge them to show us where they have published the names of those to conduct the congress as stipulated by the PDP guidelines.

"Our members should be set for the next line of action within few days, if this impunity by some members of the party is not reversed.

"We do not want to give ultimatum to NWC, but the stakeholders will be meeting every six hours waiting for the final decision of the party, before we take final decision on our next move in the next few days."

He, however, said the decision of the stakeholders as it concerned the congress would be made known to the former vice president, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, as the founder of PDP in the. country.
