Woman Commits Suicide After Givin Birth To Twins

Ede town, headquarters of Ede North Local Government Area of Osun State, was on Wednesday, thrown into mourning when a 27-year-old woman, Mrs Shekinat Abdurazaq, took her own life. The deceased, a native of the area, gave birth to a set of twins 11 days before. According to an eyewitness, the deceased had taken one of her children to school and, on her way back, jumped into River Osun. It was gathered that she offered prayers on the bridge before jumping into the river. Efforts by beggars, who beg for alms on the bridge to rescue her,proved abortive. It was further learnt that when her husband, who was informed of the incident, got to the bank of the river, he also attempted tojump into the river but was prevented by the people around who later alerted the police. He was subsequently arrested and detained at the Police “A” division in Ede. No reason was advanced for the deceased’s action as she had no quarrel with her husband or anymember her family.

Nigerian union suspends strike after president cuts fuel prices

At last, after marathon talks between the Federal Government and Labour, President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday reduced petrol pump price to N97 per litre. The offer was the thrust of a presidential broadcast this morning. The President made the announcement in a national broadcast this morning, the second time, he would be addressing the nation in two weeks. He said government would continue to pursue full deregulation of the downstream petroleum sector, but given the hardships being suffered by Nigerians, the reduction was approved. Government, he also said, was working hard to reduce recurrent expenditure in line with current realities and to cut down on the cost of governance. The Federal Government through the PPPRA on January 1, 2012 removed the fuel subsidy which effectively announced take-off of its deregulation policy. The price rose from N65 to N141 per litre immediately. Nigerian labor unions suspended Nationwide strike after president cuts fuel prices from N140 per liter to N97 per liter.

1 killed in Kogi •As protests continue nationwide •Ajimobi vows to deal with protesters after 5.00 p.m.

A 16-year-old boy has allegedly been killed by the police during a protest in Lokoja, just as journalists escaped death while a bus belonging to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) was smashed in Lokoja, Kogi State, on Thursday. The protesters, who had assembled in the Freedom Square, Lokoja, as early as 6.00 a.m., Were dislodged by armed mobile policemen. The protesters passed a vote of no confidence in the state chairman of NLC, Mr James Odaudu, and his executive. The protesters, who assembled peacefully along Angwar Aza, near Megeri Palace in Lokoja, were caught unawares, when the policemen allegedly opened fire on them and killed one Anas Gambo, who was not part of the protest, along Madabo. Many people were also injured during the clash which lasted for two hours. It was gathered that after killing Gambo, the police took his body away in one of their vehicles. Newsmen, who were at the scene to cover the protest, were almost killed as they took cover to avoid the police onslaught. A bus belonging to the Kogi State chapter of the NBA was smashed by the angry protesters. Some of the protesters, who spoke accused the police of killing Gambo, adding that they only assembled without going to the street when armed mobile policemen stormed the area and started shooting at people.
